Almost every monochrome manuscript accident starts the same way: you meant to build two-tone artwork, but grey ended up mixed in anyway. Here is what separates two-tone from greyscale, what happens once anti-aliasing sneaks in, and where to look in Clip Studio Paint to catch it.

What actually separates two-tone from greyscale
A two-tone (duotone) page is a manuscript where every pixel can only be black or white — grey does not exist as a state, so density has to come from a halftone screen or from how densely lines pack instead. A greyscale page lets the pixel itself hold 256 steps of midtone between black and white. Clip Studio Paint's export settings describe Gray the same way: it converts the file to a 256-step gradient from black to white.
From the print shop's side, the real difference is who builds the halftone screen. In two-tone artwork the screen is already decided at the manuscript stage, so the gap between screen and print stays small. Greyscale artwork still carries midtones, so turning those into a screen becomes a step the print shop performs. Neither is "correct" — what matters is deciding up front which you are building and staying consistent with it.
Read the print shop's spec first
- If the spec says "monochrome 2-tone, 600dpi," build the manuscript as two-tone from the start. Any area painted in grey needs to already be converted into a halftone tone.
- If it says something like "greyscale, 350dpi," you can submit with midtones left in. Anti-aliasing is not a problem there either.
- Two-tone specs ask for higher resolution because a single pixel cannot express gradation on its own — line weight and dot shape both have to be drawn out entirely in pixels instead.
- Mixing two-tone and greyscale pages within the same book changes how the print shop processes each page, so density will not match from page to page. Keep it consistent within one interior.
What happens once anti-aliasing sneaks in
Anti-aliasing, per the official manual, is set on lines and boundaries and described as smoothing a line's jaggedness into a clean outline. On screen it is an obvious improvement, but what it is actually doing is placing pixels of intermediate darkness along a stroke's edge — manufacturing grey that a two-tone manuscript was never supposed to have.
- If grey mixes into a two-tone submission, it gets reduced to two tones somewhere, at the print shop or in software. Exactly where, and at what threshold, is out of the manuscript maker's hands, so line weight and fine detail can end up different from intended.
- Choosing Duotone (Toning) at export converts the file, per the manual, "using screentones according to the Default frequency" of the canvas. Grey along a stroke's edge gets replaced with halftone dots too, so a thin line's edge breaks into speckled dots and reads as rippling.
- Dots from a pasted-in tone and new dots freshly created from an anti-aliased edge do not share a period or angle. Where the two interfere you get moiré, showing up most exactly where the manuscript looked smoothest on screen.
- Duotone (Threshold), per the manual, "sets the brightness of the canvas to 50% as the threshold and converts it to a binarized state," so grey gets sorted to black or white right at that line. A pale grey area can jump to white, a darker one to solid black.
- Grey is not only introduced by line art — eraser edges, selection boundaries, and interpolation from transforming or resizing create it too. Turning off anti-aliasing just on your pen is not enough, which is exactly why.
Checking the current state in Clip Studio Paint
- Check the canvas's Basic expression color, chosen from Color, Gray, or Monochrome when it was created; if Gray or Color, the drawing layers were built in a state that can hold midtones.
- Select layers one at a time and check Expression color in the Layer Property palette. It can be changed per layer, so one layer disagreeing with the canvas-wide setting can slip in unnoticed — most accidents come down to exactly one leftover layer like this.
- Setting Expression color to Monochrome brings up Color Threshold and Alpha Threshold. Per the manual, Color Threshold "determines the border between black and white," and Alpha Threshold "determines the border between black and white and transparent" — these decide which way a semi-transparent stroke is sorted.
- Check Expression color in the export settings. Auto detect appropriate color depth, per the manual, sets it based on each layer's own — so one leftover grey layer exports a two-tone manuscript as grey instead. Choose the option explicitly for a genuinely two-tone export.
How to fix it
- Lines you have not drawn yet
- The tool's Anti-aliasing strength can be set to None, Weak, Middle, or Strong. If you have decided to build two-tone, set it to None — and match that across every tool that can create an edge, not just your pen: fill, shapes, eraser too.
- A raster layer you have already drawn
- Set that layer's Expression color to Monochrome and use Color Threshold to decide where black and white get sorted. Deciding the threshold layer by layer while you can see the result gives more control over how the line survives than leaving the conversion to export time.
- Areas you painted in grey
- Turn on Tone in the Layer Property palette to convert the fill into a halftone screen using Frequency, Density, Dot settings, and Angle. Turning it into a screen at the manuscript stage means your intended pattern survives even a two-tone export, and lets you check for moiré between overlapping tones on the manuscript itself.
- Lines on a vector layer
- The manual describes a vector layer as letting you change brush shape, brush size, or line color, or redraw the line, even after it is drawn — but anti-aliasing is not on that list. Reliable options: set the layer's Expression color to Monochrome and reduce to two tones with the threshold, or set Anti-aliasing to None and redraw. A vector layer can also have its Expression color set to Monochrome or Gray.
- Reducing everything at the very end
- Choosing Duotone (Threshold) as the export's Expression color is a PRO/EX feature, with the threshold fixed at 50% brightness. To set your own threshold instead, use Color Threshold on the layer.
What this site's monochrome artwork check tells you
Even once you think you have fixed everything, what reaches the print shop is the exported image. This site's preflight checker has a monochrome artwork check that reads that image at its original, unscaled size, since downscaling's interpolation manufactures grey a two-tone manuscript should never have, erases single-pixel lines, and destroys a screen's period. It looks at three things:
- Tone levels
- Reported as one of four categories: two-tone, almost two-tone (anti-aliased), greyscale, or chromatic pixels mixed in. It reads anti-aliasing when midtones sit in a narrow area and only where that midtone touches both near-black and near-white (a hard edge) — telling apart a grey manuscript never reduced from pen work with anti-aliasing still on.
- Periodic screen
- Measures a screen's period and orientation from the original-size pixels and reports an estimated line count and angle at output size. When four times that line count exceeds the required resolution, it is flagged as too fine. It is an estimate, so cross-check it against the Tone settings you used in Clip Studio Paint.
- Thinnest stroke (hairline)
- Excludes anything reading as a halftone screen, then measures the thinnest line at output size in millimeters. Under 0.1mm raises a warning. At 600dpi, 0.1mm is roughly 2.4 pixels, so a one- or two-pixel line lands right at that boundary.
Chromatic pixels mixed in raises a separate warning. A color layer left visible in what was meant to be monochrome, or a blue-pencil rough or color note left behind, are typical of what this catches. Everything runs inside your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
If I am submitting greyscale, is it fine to leave anti-aliasing turned on?
Yes. A greyscale spec already allows midtones, so grey at a line's edge is not a problem there either. That said, if grey-painted areas end up on the same page as tones that are already halftone screens, the print shop's own screening can interfere with your manuscript's screen. If using tones, either bring the grey areas into tone too, or build the whole page in grey and leave screening to the print shop.
I exported as two-tone, so why does it still come back as "almost two-tone (anti-aliased)"?
Check whether you exported as JPEG. Its lossy compression manufactures intermediate values at the black-white boundary that were never in the original, so a non-lossy format like PNG is the safe choice for two-tone artwork. If it is already PNG, grey is most likely being introduced in a transform, a resize, or how layers are composited, so go back through each layer's Expression color one at a time.
Can I shrink a manuscript with tones on it myself before I submit it?
Better not to. A screen is a periodic pattern, and the interpolation from resizing breaks that period, producing moiré that was never there to begin with. If you already know it will print at a reduced size, decide the manuscript-side line count first so the screen lands at your intended line count after reduction, and only then apply the tone.
